What to know about AR

AN AUGMENTED REALITY GALLERY EXPERIENCE

For my senior thesis, I was curious to learn more about Augmented Reality (AR), and possibly to create an AR experience myself. This gallery experience showcases what I learned through my research and showcasing it in an educational and interactive way for other people like me who are curious about it. The posters shown are scanable with a tablet, and augmented reality is activated to make the posters come to life.

Research + Design phase

During my research, I found that there was 4 different types of Augmented Reality.

  1. Marker based

  2. Location based

  3. Super imposition based

  4. Projection based

I then prototyped examples of what each augmented reality experience would look like:

Here is an initial sketch of what I envisioned the gallery experience to look like:

I wanted users to be able to learn about the different types and uses of augmented reality by taking an iPad and scanning the posters.

The final gallery experience

  1. Users would come to the first poster and learn what augmented reality is and what industries are using it

  2. Then the following posters would have examples of each type of AR with its definition, common uses, and ways to experience it in real life

  3. Finally, the user would take the tablet, and scan each poster to activate a live example of what each augmented reality looks like.
